125 Years GWF

The 1950s marked a period of cautious growth for GWF. Europe was in the midst of reconstruction, but the economic recovery was slow. During this phase, GWF focused on producing water and gas meters, which were in demand in Switzerland and neighboring countries. Despite material shortages and market uncertainties, the company remained resilient and gradually stabilized. In the late 1950s, the economy picked up, and GWF benefited from the increasing demand for precise and reliable measuring devices. The introduction of dry-dial water meters with magnetic transmission in 1960 was a turning point. This innovative technology, which allowed for greater accuracy and durability, quickly became a bestseller and opened new markets for GWF both domestically and internationally.

The 1960s were marked by economic growth. GWF expanded its production capacities and modernized its production lines to meet the rising demand. Exports were booming, although uncertainties around prices, returns, and licenses remained a constant concern. Gas utility companies still faced major challenges, but GWF established itself as a reliable partner, providing innovative solutions for the industry’s evolving needs. However, growth did not come without setbacks. In 1967, a large fire broke out in one of GWF’s production facilities, destroying over 1,000 gas meters and causing significant financial damage. This disaster was a severe blow, but GWF once again demonstrated its resilience.

The 1960s brought solid growth to GWF, and by the end of the decade, the company celebrated its 70th anniversary. The 1969 annual report reflected an optimistic but cautious outlook: “May the promising development that GWF has experienced since the mid-1950s continue; but let us never forget that today’s political and economic climate holds significant dangers, with risks lurking at every corner.” These words encapsulate the experiences and lessons of past decades. GWF had weathered difficult times but had continually reinvented itself and adapted to changing conditions. Looking ahead, there was hope, but also an awareness of the challenges that the future could bring.

GWF’s history in the 1950s and 1960s is a testament to the company’s ability to succeed during times of change by relying on innovation, quality, and the loyalty of its employees.
